BBC: Performing Groups

Creating a consistent and unified brand identity

The Brief

As a long-standing partner of the BBC, we were asked to redesign the websites for the BBC Performing Groups. All six full-time professional ensembles (five orchestras and the BBC Singers) required their own identity within a cohesive and attractive site. We needed to simplify the user journey, improve functionality and reflect the status of the ensembles as international professionals.

The Insight

While each group had distinct audiences, and so required a visual identity that showcased their individuality, there also needed to be overall consistency. It needed to be clear that the groups were part of a bigger collective.

The Idea

We defined a design strategy that cleverly intertwined each Performing Group’s visual identity, bringing them together as an overarching ‘Performing Groups’ brand. We then planned, designed and built the Performing Groups portal, as well as websites for each of the six full-time ensembles and a bilingual version for the BBC National Orchestra of Wales.

The Results

• Individual, distinct identities beneath the umbrella of a consistent look and feel
• New functionality, including a centrally-managed concert diary which enabled concert-goers to browse upcoming events by date, Performing Group, genre or series
